Job Description






The Life Cycle Engineering Department supports the design, construction and test of in-service Navy DDG 51 and DDG 1000 surface combatants in multiple locations around the world. Our DDG 51 Electrical Engineering team is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer to join in our team. This role supports the design development of Electrical Power and Lighting systems for Ship Alterations, assists Navy counterparts with evaluation of electric plant enhancements required for modernization of the DDG 51 class, and leads technical activity related to procurement of power equipment procurement for the alterations being executed.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Performing GSO compliant power analysis for ship alterations and provide direction to detail design to meet Navy requirements.
  • Integration of new equipment into shipboard power design.
  • Writing and maintaining equipment purchase specifications and reviewing vendor submittals.
  • Interfacing with Navy counterparts and detail design teammates to resolve technical issues and develop appropriate solutions for modernization of Naval surface combatants.
  • Performing calculations, modeling, and simulation of electrical power designs using in house and/or external engineering applications required to validate compliance with Navy requirements and preparing documentation.
  • Providing circuit protection using breaker sizing for equipment and motor controller relays.
  • Modeling breaker coordination, developing electric plant load analysis, and preparing documentation to establish engineering basis requirements.
  • Reviewing drawings at the preliminary and detailed design level for functional issues and providing comments to detail design teammates.
  • Participation in special studies and projects working with Navy sponsors to evaluate ship changes involving replacement of obsolescent equipment, modernization of ship systems, or development of new capabilities. Includes preparing engineering study reports and delivering presentations.
  • Support travel associated with procurement responsibilities and interface with the Navy.








Required/Preferred Education/Training






  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Electrical Engineering required.








Required/Preferred Experience






  • Advanced understanding and knowledge of power distribution systems and components required.
  • 15 years engineering experience. Experience with design of power distribution systems for marine and military systems. Familiarity with system controls a plus.
  • Experience with US Naval Combatants Designs and working knowledge of Navy power system requirements (ship specifications, General Specifications for Overhaul, Mil-specifications) and methods (electrical system design criteria and practices and design data sheets).
  • Demonstrated ability to critically assess technical problems, evaluate potential options, and develop a solution with limited information desired.
  • Demonstrated ability writing engineering requirement specifications.
  • Ability to read, understand, and interpret diagrams, schematics, and blueprints/drawings required. Familiarity with CAD systems and databases desired.
  • Experience with arc fault analysis desired.
  • Advanced knowledge of power generation and distribution control systems desired.
  • Demonstrated positive attitude toward participation in a team environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributing or leading engineering team member.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple projects and assignments with competing priorities desired.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, organize, plan, and execute technical projects.
  • A broad knowledge of and experience with a variety of computer systems including; Excel, Word & Adobe required. Experience with Paladin DesignBase 6 software desired.
