Description

Coherent Aerospace & Defense, Emerging Products & Technologies Business Unit is seeking an electrical engineer to contribute to the development of advanced laser systems for defense applications.


Primary Duties & Responsibilities


Lead Electrical Architecture and Design: Works as a member of a cross-disciplinary team of systems engineers, optical engineers, FPGA engineers, and software engineers to conceptualize a system solution that meets customer requirements. Leads the design of printed circuit board assemblies (PCBAs) from concept to completion with only high-level instructions. Defines the electrical architecture of the system and PCBAs to meet customer specifications. Supports customer reviews to pass design development gates. Creates schematic drawings, BOMs, and ECOs to document design and resolves all DFM issues. Manages work assignments across a small team of hardware engineers.


System Integration & Test Support: Executes the integration of electronics, FPGA, and software/firmware. Supports integration and test activities from initial board-level bring-up through final system test.


Engineering Functional Management: Serves as the electrical engineering functional manager, coordinating assignments of electrical engineering staff to programs across the Emerging Products & Technologies organization. Leads the development and implementation of electrical design and review processes.


New Business Development: Participates in writing proposals and providing cost and schedule estimates in support of new business pursuits.


Technical Expertise: Serves as one of the organization’s subject matter experts with extensive knowledge and expertise in electrical circuit design. Extensive knowledge and expertise with extremely complex assignments that very few employees can master. Work is accomplished without considerable direction. Implements new products, processes, standards, or operational plans that will have impact on the achievement of functional results.


Education & Experience


Minimum of 12 years of related experience with a Bachelor’s degree; or 10 years and a Master’s degree; or a PhD with 7 years' experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.


Skills


Strong RF/analog circuit design skills are required.


Strong background in circuit theory, control loops, high-speed DAC/ADCs, and RF fundamentals.


Experience with programmable logic devices and microprocessor circuit design are required.


Experience with high density multi-layer PCB design  is required.


Knowledgeable of thermal and EMI management in design of circuit boards is required.


Use of schematic capture tools (e.g., Altium, Orcad) and simulators is required.


Familiarity with PCB layout browsers (Altium, PADS, Xpedition) is required.


Experience with switching power supplies, TEC controllers and Laser Diode drivers strongly desired but not required.


Background in RF signal processing, mixed-signal design and optical fiber systems is highly desired.


Must have demonstrated experience working with cross-disciplinary engineering teams to develop and test highly-functional integrated systems.


Past leadership experience as a lead engineer on a project or leader of a small team, including delegating objectives and tasks to achieve goals, is desired.


Experience working with laser systems is desired but not required. Past experience on high-reliability systems for defense and/or space is desired but not required.


Must be able to obtain/maintain a US Government security clearance if one is required to perform the job responsibilities.
