Senior Electrical Engineer

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team. This role involves leading complex electrical engineering projects within the EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction, and Management) sector, with a focus on industrial and mining electrical networks. The ideal candidate will be responsible for delivering high-quality designs, managing quality assurance processes, and leading technical teams, while also mentoring junior engineers. A passion for innovation, quality, and client satisfaction is key to success in this role.

Duties & Responsibilities

Project Leadership & Design Excellence:

  • Lead the preparation of technical documentation, including cost estimation, for tenders and proposals related to industrial and mining electrical projects.
  • Oversee the design and engineering of LV and MV systems, including transformers, switchgear, and protection schemes.
  • Ensure all designs meet client specifications, regulatory standards, and industry best practices.
  • Review and approve technical documentataion such as MCP designs, schematics, and protection designs.
  • Manage and execute Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) for electrical equipment, ensuring compliance with quality and safety standards.

Quality Assuracne & Continuous Improvement:

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Quality Control Plans (QCP) and Quality Managment Plans (QMP) for electrical engineering projects.
  • Monitor and manage the performance of electrical equipmet, ensuring optimal functioning throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Lead initiatives to identify opportunities for continuous improvement in processes, designs and safety practices.

Mentoring & Team Developement:

  • Mentor junior engineers and technical staff, fostering an environment of continuous learning and professional developement.
  • Actively support the growth of engineering talent by providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and encouraging innovation.

Project Management & Risk Mitigation:

  • Demonstrate project management capabilities by managing project timelines, scope and budgets.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks to ensure successful project delivery, focusing and safety, quality, and cost-efficiency.
  • Develop detailed project schedules and ensure effective use of resources throughout project execution.

Stakeholder & Client Engagement:

  • Liaise with clients, contractors, stakeholders and regulatory bodies to secure project approvals, ensure alignment, and address any concerns thoughout the project lifecycle.
  • Act as the primary technical interface with client, providing expert advice and ensuring that expectations are met or exceeded.

Renewables & Grid Interconnections:

  • Bring expertise in integrating renewable energy solutions into transmission and distribution networks, as well as experience with grid interconnections to support sustainable and innovative electrical designs.

Documentation & Reporting:

  • Develop and manage design criteria, technical specifications, cost estimates, bill of quantities, and project documentation.
  • Ensure all project deliverables are documented and reported accurately, in line with client and regulatory requirements.

 

Desired Experience & Qualification

Education:

  • BSc or B.Eng in Electrical Engineering from a recognized institution

Professional Registration:

  • Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (Pr.Eng) with ECSA (Engineering Council of South Africa)

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in electrical engineering, particularly within industrial and mining electrical networks.
  • Proven expertise in LV and MV reticulation, FAT/SAT, transformer specifications, protection design, and project supervision.
  • Strong understanding of EPCM and EPC project environments, including budgeting, scheduling, and risk management.
  • A background in protection design and relay configuration is highly advantageous.
  • Experience with renewable energy systems and grid interconnections is a plus.
  • Prior experience in managing teams and mentoring junior engineers.

 

Skills & Competencies:

  • Technical Skills:
    • Expertise in electrical codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., IEC, IEEE, SANS).
    • Strong knowledge of design software (AutoCAD, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, ETAP, COMOS, etc.).
    • Excellent understanding of equipment specification, procurement processes, and vendor management.
  • Leadership & Communication:
    • Strong leadership skills with the ability to guide, motivate, and inspire engineering teams.
    • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present complex technical information to diverse audiences.
    • Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Project Management:
    • Demonstrated experience in managing electrical engineering projects, with a solid understanding of project scheduling, budgeting, and risk management.
    • Knowledge of project management tools and methodologies.
