Summary:

Our award-winning client is looking for a highly motivated power electronics engineer to join their Sensing and Communications Department. Successful candidates will have a BS, MS, or PhD degree in electrical engineering with professional experience in design, development, and test of power electronic systems. Professional experience beyond 5 years is desired, but may not be required in all circumstances. Successful applicants will support the design and development of a wide variety of underwater maritime systems including electromechanical actuation systems, payloads for unmanned underwater vehicles, acoustic communication transceivers, wireless power transfer, and high power acoustic transmit arrays.

Candidates must have a proven track record of designing and implementing custom PCBs for prototype R&D systems. Experience designing energy storage system components, DC/DC converters, power amplifiers and magnetics, and interfacing to the embedded processors that control such devices is required. Previous experience laying out boards and/or managing vendors which provide layout services is highly desired, as is experience designing for EMC and testing and integrating PCBs into larger systems.

Responsibilities:

Design, development, integration, and debugging of complex power systems.

Required Qualifications:

  • Experience with power system design consisting of circuit analysis and simulation, component selection, schematic capture, PCB design, and verification testing.

  • Design of DC/DC and AC/DC power systems ranging from 500 W to 10 kW for use in harsh operating environments.

  • Experience with implementation of high availability power supplies and/or failover systems.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of electronic power devices such as MOSFETs, Schottky Diodes, SiC FETs, and IGBT’s.

  • Proven experience designing with electromechanical actuators, DC/DC converters, power amplifiers, and magnetics.

  • Experience troubleshooting electronic systems.

  • BS in electrical engineering with a power systems focus.

  • Able to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance.

Desired Attributes and Skills:

  • Prior experience designing electronics for underwater maritime systems.

  • Experience working with acoustic transducers.

  • Experience with various power converter topologies such as Buck, Boost, Flyback, SEPIC, etc. and their control methodologies.

  • Previous experience with or oversight of electronic layout, bill-of-materials, and assembly process.

  • Experience with common digital communication schemes (RS232/RS422, I2C, I2S, SPI, McBSP).

  • Basic understanding of signal processing and Matlab data analysis.

  • Prior experience creating technical content for new products, ideas, or other business development pursuits.

  • Experience working in an R&D environment and working in small multidisciplinary teams.

  • Experience mentoring junior EE staff on electronics design, PCB implementation, and board troubleshooting.

  • Experience with C/C++ coding for microcontrollers (or similar).

  • Experience using National Instruments (or similar) data acquisition systems and LabView.
