The Role

The role is focused on stakeholder engagement, requirements capture and development of low-cost and high reliability electronics onto existing and future platforms, as well as development of internal prototypes and test equipment. It requires a good knowledge of power, analog and embedded electronics as well as interest in embedded designs. This is a vital role in the creation and improvement of all Electric platforms within Brompton Bicycle, requiring a can-do approach candidate. Moreover, candidate will have opportunity to contribute toward electronic system architecture design, maturity, ways of working, promoting good engineering practices and system engineering.

Main duties

  • Contributing to the development of low-cost & high reliability electronics into moderate volume markets through the entire engineering lifecycle,

  • Designing, analysing, and verifying electronics for consumer facing products, internal prototypes and test equipment,

  • Supporting technical development, other team members as well as external stakeholders on ad hoc basis,

  • Working on improvements and quality into all aspects of Brompton’s electronics, including policy, process and detailed design,

  • Supporting Systems and Software engineers to develop requirements & architectures, resolve complex systematic issues and integrate software onto hardware,

  • Assisting manufacturers with test equipment for electronic product lines, end of line testers.

Essential Skills

  • Demonstrable experience of product life cycle design and support in electronics team setting

  • Preparing and presenting designs and concepts for electronic products and systems to colleagues, management and other stakeholders,

  • Drawing up detailed drawings, schematics and models using computer design software,

  • Review and release drawing including schematic, pcb capture and assembly drawing to manufacturers

  • Designing and building electronic components and circuits for use in products,

  • Basic understanding of software and ability to work with software (flashing/debugging tools and similar),

  • Ability to prepare cost estimates for product and technical solution.

  • Experience of defining and performing set-to-work and verification & validation, including simulation, worst-case analysis, bench testing,

  • Running effective testing and diagnostics that lead to measured product improvements,

  • General knowledge and understanding of EMC in a power electronics context,

Desirable Skills

  • It would be beneficial to have knowledge of 3-phase inverters, DC-DC converters, microcontrollers, and analog electronics,

  • It would be advantages to have prior experience with PCB layout design and design for manufacturing.

  • Experience of working with electronic manufacturing in a moderate volume commercial or automotive context and interfacing with suppliers

  • Knowledge and/or experience of Systems Engineering principles, e.g. Requirements, Traceability,

  • Comfortable working on multiple projects simultaneously,

  • Knowledge of system engineering would be advantageous.

  • Knowledge of working to safety standards, e.g. IEC61508, ISO26262,

  • Knowledge of selecting and specifying cabling & connectors,

  • Knowledge of batteries and electric machines.

Education

Ideally the individual will have the following educational and professional qualifications or experience:

  • Degree education in related subjects (computer science, systems engineering, electronics, electrical engineering, mechatronics, or equivalent),

  • The ability to demonstrate a solid engineering/technical background in a relevant environment,

  • The ability to demonstrate hands-on experience in a similar role,

  • The successful candidate will have at least 3+ years’ experience as an engineer, within R&D or commercial product design in electronics setting.
