Duties and Responsibilities:
Lead and execute grid studies using PowerFactory/PSSE and/or ETAP.
Handle the technical design and power systems studies for projects.
Provide input into the design of transmission and distribution switching stations and substations (11 kV to 500 kV).
Substation primary plant design, including SLD, GA, sections, EarthGrid, lighting, lightning, trench and conduit layout.
Perform earthing design using CDEGS.
Develop lighting designs in Relux and Dialux (including 3D models in CAD).
Design lightning protection using CDEGS based on international standards.
Perform EMF calculations and modelling in CDEGS.
Calculate corona, noise, and RFI using EPRI methods and CDEGS.
Conduct short circuit forces calculations (MATHCAD advantageous).
Compile BOMs, reports, and engineering calculations.
Prepare primary plant equipment technical specifications and schedules.
Supervise and lead small teams (Technicians, Students, Draughtsmen, Graduates).
Provide guidance and mentorship to junior team members.
Review and assess work produced by other team members for accuracy and quality.
Desired Experience and Qualifications:
Qualifications:
BEng/BSc/BTech in Electrical Engineering, with a preference for specialisation in power systems studies.
Professional registration with ECSA.
Experience:
Minimum 6 years of practical experience in the electrical/consulting industry, including experience in the mining industry.
Minimum 3 years of experience in Power System Studies (PowerFactory, ETAP, and CDEGS).
Strong understanding of substation equipment, structures, hardware, clamps, busbars, cables, and conductors for voltages up to 500 kV.
Basic renewable energy design experience.
Basic LV and secondary plant experience is advantageous.
Experience in overhead line design using PLS-CADD is advantageous.
Project management experience, including scheduling in MS Projects.
Proficient in EMT simulation software and commonly used network simulation software (e.g., PowerFactory, ETAP, PSSE/PSCAD).
Experience in performing studies such as Grid Code compliance, Grid Impact Study, Transmission planning studies, insulation coordination, switching studies, power quality studies, EMTP Studies, transient and dynamic performance studies, small signal analysis, and forensic studies.
