Electrical Engineer

Status: Full-Time, Salaried, Exempt
Salary: Salaries at Advanced Ionics are paid bi-weekly
Reports to: Engineering Team Manager
Position Summary: The Electrical Engineer is responsible for working as part of the Advanced Ionics Engineering team, and will be responsible for the design, development, implementation and maintenance of controls, instrumentation, and power electronics.
Expected Hours of Work: This is a full-time, position. This role is in-person only at our Milwaukee office. Days and hours of the work are Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:00pm. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. 
Essential Functions of the Position:

Instrumentation

• Specify, select, and integrate sensors, transducers, and data acquisition systems for real-time feedback and diagnostics. Work cross-functionally with leadership to define and implement a sensor strategy to assure comprehensive data collection and analytics.
• Develop calibration protocols and ensure instrumentation complies with industry standards and regulations.  
• Troubleshoot instrumentation issues to maintain high system reliability and accuracy.

Power Electronics

• Analyze and troubleshoot power electronic circuits, including DC-DC converters, inverters, and active rectifiers.
• Develop with partners and validate power supply and energy management systems for high-efficiency operation.
• Oversee thermal and EMI/EMC analysis to ensure compliance with safety and performance standards.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

• Work closely with mechanical, software, and systems engineering team and our external partners to ensure seamless integration of electrical components.
• Lead the design and development of control systems for customer projects, including working with external vendors and suppliers; evaluate and develop distributed control system architectures if/as required 
• You will collaborate with a multidisciplinary team to ensure the seamless integration of advanced control and sensing technologies, enabling the efficient operation and optimization of the electrolyzer system during development and in the field.
• Maintain detailed documentation of system designs, configurations, and modifications.

Controls and Automation

• Design, develop, and implement control systems for industrial and high-performance applications.
• Develop and tune control algorithms (e.g., PID, model predictive control) for complex systems.
• Program and configure PLCs, HMIs, and embedded systems for automation and monitoring.  Develop, execute and implement new supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) strategies.

Professional Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or Controls Engineering/Science from an accredited college or university
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in an engineering environment, with minimum of 3 of those years focused on controls and algorithms.
• Expertise and proficiency in PID, PLC and SCADA programming, with a strong background in control system architectures.  Work with communication protocols such as Modbus, EtherCAT, CAN bus, etc. 
• Experienced and skilled in appropriate programming language(s) and software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, Python).
• Strong knowledge of analog and digital circuit design, PCB design tools (e.g., Altium, Eagle), and simulation software (e.g., SPICE, PSIM).
• Familiarity with power electronic devices such as IGBTs, MOSFETs, and SiC components.
• Experience with instrumentation calibration, signal conditioning, and noise reduction techniques.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams and leadership
• Preferred:  Experience with renewable energy systems, electric vehicle technologies, or grid-tied power systems.
• Preferred:  Knowledge of safety standards and certifications (e.g., UL, IEC, CE).
• Preferred:  Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing.
