Position Summary:

 

The Controls Electrical Engineer will be responsible for engineering tasks under the direct supervision of a Senior Controls Engineer. These responsibilities include design, specification, schematic capture, installation, and system commissioning of controls equipment in a linear accelerator industrial control system as well as writing documentation and test plans. This role is onsite at West Valley City, Utah, with some travel to Valencia, California, as required, in order to assist with initial deployment and commissioning of the various control systems.

Responsibilities

What You'll Do:

  • Work with other engineers to ensure proper integration between hardware and software systems.
  • Participate in the design, installation, & commissioning of Electrical Cabinets for a Linear Accelerator.
  • Research and implement new hardware requirements determined by stakeholder input.
  • Implement mock-ups and prototypes for proof-of-concept efforts.
  • Analyze electrical, data communication, and dynamic systems.
  • Research new products, technologies, and methodologies and conduct trade-off studies.
  • Assist in writing test procedures and assisting with installation/commissioning efforts.
  • Participate in hazard analysis meetings to identify and address safety concerns.
  • Troubleshoot PLCs, network devices, instrumentation and controls.
  • Write documentation and contribute to team knowledgebase.
  • Configure various instrumentation and power supply equipment.
  • Participate in the integration of PLC software with EPICS (Experimental Physics Industrial Control System) software.
  • Write documentation and contribute to team knowledgebase.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

  • B.S Degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Physics, Electrical/Computer Engineering, or related field.
  • 3+ years of professional engineering design experience.
  • Experience with design of electrical cabinets according to standards such as UL508A, NFPA79, or similar NRTL approvals.
  • Practical, hands-on experience building control systems.
  • Experience using test equipment for electrical and electronics work.
  • Professional experience with Electrical Schematic capture software (SOLIDWORKS Electrical, EagleCAD, AutoCAD Electrical).
  • Proficiency with Office/Google productivity tools (Word/Excel/Powerpoint...etc).
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Familiarity working with High-speed electronics.
  • Familiarity working with High vacuum applications.
  • Familiarity with large scale, distributed control systems.
  • Familiarity with accelerator operations.
  • Experience working in a R&D environment.
  • Experience troubleshooting complex control systems.
  • Experience with Beckhoff control system.
  • Experience in interpreting electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, and P&ID drawings.

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working in a facility that produces radiation.
  • Work to be conducted in both an office environment and the production facility.
  • Must be able to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Frequent use of computer with repetitive use of keyboard, mouse and manual dexterity.
  • <10% Travel.
