Description

We are currently looking for a hands-on Staff Electrical Engineer who approaches design challenges with creativity, intellectual rigor, and an effective balance of theory and empiricism; is proactive in their approach to problem solving; and is a collaborative team player. This role includes not only designing complex PCBAs but also proposing the overall electrical architecture and selecting key electrical components to ensure optimal system performance. You will work closely with cross-functional teams, including mechanical, software, and systems engineers, to ensure seamless integration of electrical components. You will also ensure compliance with stringent medical standards, focusing on electrical safety and electromagnetic compatibility (EMC/EMI) requirements. This is a unique opportunity to design a system from scratch for a medical robotic system using all your experience and state-of-the-art technologies. This is a full time on-site position and will require reporting to our offices located in Los Gatos, CA.

Responsibilities, Skills & Hands-On Experience

  • Design and development of embedded microcontroller circuitry.

  • Schematic capture and Multi-layer Rigid, Rigid-Flex and Flex PCB layout using Altium Designer.

  • Integration of COTS power supplies and embedded computers along with custom boards into medical equipment.

  • Design, construction, and programming of R&D test systems and product prototypes.

  • Hands-on bench test and circuit debug.

  • Collaboration with the design of the electronics enclosure.

  • Development of design specifications based on top-level product requirements.

  • Development and execution of design verification tests.

  • Design for compliance with the requirements of all relevant standards and regulations, including EN 60601 and ISO14708 series, 21CFR820, and FCC parts 15 and 18.

  • Extensive knowledge of medical industry standards (IEC 60601, ISO 14971) and experience in risk management practices.

  • Design with serial data hardware, including SPI, I2C and UART interfaces.

  • Design with and analysis of analog and passive linear circuits, including analysis of basic R-L-C circuits in the time and frequency domains.

  • Switch-mode power conversion circuit design.

  • Experience with use of electronics test equipment and embedded development tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, DVMs, and spectrum or vector network analyzers and emulators.

  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.

  • Good understanding with EMC, ESD, and signal integrity considerations in PCB design.

Preferred Skills & Hands-On Experience

  • Solid understanding of the content and application of EN60601 and ISO14708 requirements.

  • Some experience with magnetics design.

  • Rigid-Flex and Flex PCB layout with Altium Designer, or experience with a similar tool such as Allegro, OrCad, xPedition, or PADS.

  • Demonstrated ability to develop C code for embedded microcontroller applications.

  • Engineering programming in Python or Matlab/Octave.

  • Experience using COMSOL, ANSYS, or other commercial multi-physics simulation package for linked electromagnetic and thermal modelling.

  • Experience developing code for ARM Cortex-M3 and -M0.

  • Experience using GCC or Texas instruments Code Composer Studio.

  • Experience with Zigbee or other 80215 stack.

  • Experience with RF PCB layout.

  • Some experience SolidWorks.

Education & Work Experience

  • BS in Electrical Engineering.

  • 8+ years work experience, with at least 1 embedded hardware design, and at least 1 year in a medical device application.

  • Preferred: Advanced degree in an engineering discipline.
