While not responsible for basic design and drafting, they are staffed on complex projects as the lead project engineer, responsible for engineering and documenting high level systems and leading a team of other employees through project execution. They also assist others on their teams with complex project challenges, signoff on the quality of others’ work, and serve as a teacher and mentor, responsible for growing the engineering expertise of their team.

II. Duties & Responsibilities
People

  • Holding all team members accountable for the quality of the work they produce and sharing immediate feedback.
  • Providing feedback to Team Leaders on the quality of the work their team members are producing.
  • Leading teams of employees to execute on projects. This includes delegating tasks plus reviewing and taking ownership of all work produced by their project team.
Projects
  • Providing quality control for project types with which they are familiar with an emphasis on the following:
    • Attending technical kickoff meetings setup by the project’s lead engineer to review project scope and ensure all engineering challenges have been identified prior to project execution.
    • Performing quality control reviews for each project at every official issuance.
    • Signing off on the quality and completeness of the projects they review.
    • Educating the project team on engineering issues found in reviews with the goal of eliminating the issue for the next project.
  • Serving as a project’s lead engineer for complex projects when staffed by a Team Leader and performing high level engineering tasks to the highest level of detail. They are not drafters; they focus on documenting high level work only then delegate other tasks to members of their project team. Tasks may include, but are not limited to:
    • Designing electrical distribution systems including zoning concepts, single line diagrams, and equipment specifications for both low and medium voltages.
    • Coordinating with local electrical utility companies and designing site electrical infrastructure plans.
    • Creating detailed reports as needed for electrical studies such as power quality, selective coordination, arc-flash incident energy, and power system reliability.
    • Performing complex electrical distribution analysis such as generator paralleling, reliability, and redundancy.
    • Performing and documenting high level code research and competently discussing it with clients, local authorities, and peers.
    • Performing advanced calculations such as load shedding, derating, custom feeder sizing, etc.
    • Researching and preparing engineering studies such as feasibility studies, life cycle analysis, and cost analysis.
    • Editing master specifications to be job specific, and writing custom specifications as required.
    • Designing complex lighting control systems in compliance with energy code requirements.
  • Understanding the processes, software, and standards necessary to complete a project within their respective discipline. They are at a level of proficiency sufficient to execute on every aspect of a project.
  • Assisting with project execution including drafting tasks when needed. This is not their primary focus, but when necessary, their help may be requested by a Team Leader.
