A leading provider of electrical and control solutions is seeking an experienced Electrical Design Engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining electrical systems, ensuring compliance with industry standards and safety regulations. This role requires expertise in SolidWorks Electrical, a strong understanding of 230V single-phase and 400V three-phase electrics, and the ability to convert legacy Microsoft Visio designs into modern electrical schematics.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical Design & CAD Engineering

  • Develop electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control panel layouts using SolidWorks Electrical.
  • Convert and update legacy Microsoft Visio electrical drawings to ensure consistency with current design standards.
  • Generate Bills of Materials (BOMs) and support manufacturing processes.
  • Collaborate with mechanical and software engineers to integrate electrical systems with broader product designs.

Power Systems & Electrical Engineering

  • Design and implement 230V single-phase and 400V three-phase electrical systems.
  • Develop solutions for motor control (star/delta configurations, VFDs, contactors, and relays).
  • Ensure safe and efficient power distribution, load balancing, and grounding.

Testing & Compliance

  • Conduct initial verification and periodic inspection of electrical installations.
  • Perform continuity, insulation resistance, and earth loop impedance testing using standard electrical test equipment.
  • Ensure designs comply with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, ISO 9001 quality standards, and defence industry requirements.

Control Systems & Automation

  • Design control panels for industrial and defence applications.
  • Work with PLCs, SCADA systems, and automation controls to ensure seamless integration.
  • Develop low-voltage control circuits for system operation and monitoring.

Project Documentation & Standards Compliance

  • Prepare and maintain technical reports, electrical design documentation, and risk assessments.
  • Ensure all electrical work adheres to health and safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and support to manufacturing, testing, and commissioning teams.

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Proven experience in electrical design engineering, preferably within defence or industrial sectors.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks Electrical and familiarity with Microsoft Visio for legacy system conversion.
  • Strong understanding of 230V single-phase and 400V three-phase power systems.
  • Hands-on experience with electrical testing, fault-finding, and troubleshooting.
  • Knowledge of control systems, PLCs, SCADA, and industrial automation.
  • Familiarity with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations, ISO 9001 quality standards, and defence industry standards.
  • Excellent documentation skills with the ability to produce technical reports and compliance documentation.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • City & Guilds 2391-52 or equivalent in Electrical Testing & Inspection.
  • 18th Edition BS 7671 certification.
  • Experience with defence industry regulations (DEF STAN, MIL-STD).
  • Understanding of international electrical standards (IEC, NEMA, UL).

Other Requirements:

  • Full eligibility to work in the UK.
  • Full, clean UK driving licence.
  • Ability to travel to customer sites when required.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge electrical engineering projects within a highly regulated and innovative sector. Candidates with a strong electrical design background and a passion for problem-solving are encouraged to apply.
