Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) was recently chosen as the building site for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC), a one-of-a-kind nuclear physics research facility.  The EIC will be a discovery machine for unlocking the secrets of the “glue” that binds the building blocks of visible matter in the universe. The machine design is based on the existing and highly optimized RHIC hadron-hadron collider.  The EIC will consist of two intersecting accelerators, one hosting an intense beam of electrons, and the other a beam of protons or heavier atomic nuclei which will be steered into collisions.  Beyond sparking scientific discoveries in a new frontier of fundamental physics, the EIC will trigger technological breakthroughs that have broad-ranging impact on human health and national challenges.

Position Description

The Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) Radio-Frequency (RF) group has an opening for an RF Engineer to work on normal conducting RF cavities and their auxiliary components. The work for this position includes RF simulations and hands-on RF measurements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design and development of EIC normal conducting RF cavity systems, including cavities, fundamental power couplers, fundamental mode dampers, higher-order mode (HOM) dampers and tuners.
  • Provide support on Superconducting RF (SRF) development as needed.
  • Perform activities in support of procurement, fabrication and delivery, test and acceptance, installation, and commissioning.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Physics, or related discipline. Advanced degree preferred.
  • Understanding of RF Engineering.
  • Some experience or exposure to design, fabrication, and/or commissioning of high-power RF cavities.
  • Experience with design and analysis software for RF cavities and associated components, such as CST Microwave Studio and HFSS.
  • Experience with RF measurement equipment, such as Network Analyzer, Time-Domain Reflectometer and Spectrum Analyzer.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Accelerator Physics or related discipline.
  • 3+ years related work experience.
  • Knowledge of SRF for particle accelerators.
  • Knowledge of beam-cavity interaction physics.

Environmental, Health & Safety Requirements:

  • Able to lift up to 30 pounds, climb a ladder (to heights above 5 feet), wear PPE

Other Information:

  • On-site position
