Blue Ridge Power (BRP) is seeking a PV Electrical Engineer to assist BRP’s engineering department. The PV Electrical Engineer is a key member of the engineering team, specializing in providing accurate and comprehensive designs to facilitate cost estimates for photovoltaic (PV) electrical projects. This role combines technical expertise in electrical engineering with strong analytical skills to develop precise designs for cost projections. The PV Electrical Engineer collaborates closely with project managers, engineers, and stakeholders to ensure the successful estimation and execution of solar generation projects.
The PV Electrical Engineer reports directly to the Lead PV Electrical Engineer.
This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable travel distance of one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC. Any travel will be fully reimbursable.
What You’ll Do:
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop preliminary plans and documents at a 30% completion level for reliable project estimating by the estimating department.
- Perform Engineering RFP Readiness Reviews of development documents to ensure they are complete and suitable for the proposal and estimating process.
- Assist in completing material takeoffs as required for the proposal and estimating teams.
- Review equipment vendor intake forms and quotes, selecting relevant information to incorporate into project proposals.
- Thoroughly review clients' Request for Proposal (RFP) documentation to ensure alignment with project requirements and scope.
- Develop a comprehensive basis of design documents for internal design subject matter experts (SMEs) and external Engineering of Record (EOR) to follow during project execution.
- Proactively input Request for Information (RFI) responses to clarify scope or standards with the project owner based on a thorough review of RFP documents.
- Review RFP drawings or studies provided by the owner to identify potential challenges or discrepancies.
- Design PV electrical systems including DC systems (modules, inverters, and DC cabling) and AC systems (MV transformers, MV circuits – overhead and underground routing).
- Collaborate with external EOR to obtain indicative engineering pricing for inclusion in project bids.
- Review project schedules and provide guidance and quality control on proposed timelines for engineering completion.
- Stay current with industry standards, codes, vendor equipment, and trends to ensure accurate and competitive project proposals.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills, fostering collaboration among teams and productive vendor communication.
- Manage and prioritize multiple tasks to meet proposal deadlines and project development milestones.
- Perform basic functions of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook, AutoCAD, and PV design review software.
- Additional duties as assigned and/or directed.
Must-Haves:
- 3+ years of proven experience in designing PV project development, electrical design, or related roles.
- 2+ years of experience in the solar industry.
- Knowledge of electrical engineering principles (AC and DC), PV systems, construction methodologies, and cost estimation techniques.
- Proficiency in CAD software for electrical schematics and layout design.
- Familiarity with industry standards, codes (NEC), and regulations related to solar PV systems.
- Strong knowledge of PV system components, vendor equipment, and industry trends.
- Effective communication skills to convey complex concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proven ability to manage and prioritize multiple tasks and deadlines effectively.
- Decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
- Availability to perform site visits and inspections when relevant.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Products, specifically Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Ability to receive constructive feedback and make corrective changes.
Nice-to-Haves:
- Utility-scale solar industry experience.
- Knowledge of medium voltage distribution and protection systems.
- Knowledge of underground cable analysis.
- PVcase, PVSyst, and ETAP design software proficiency.
- Knowledge of arc flash study analysis.
- Knowledge of grounding study analysis.
Education and Certifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, renewable energy, or an equivalent Technology program is required.
- EIT is highly preferred.
- Professional Engineering License is preferred.
Working Environment and Physical Demand:
- This position can be remote, preferably within comfortable travel distance of one of our BRP office locations in Asheville or Fayetteville, NC.
- The position works in an office environment.
- Travel to our BRP offices and project sites up to 10-15% in given site conditions.
- Must be able to sit/stand at a desk and utilize a computer for extended periods.
- May require lifting/carrying up to 30 pounds.
