Position Objective
The Software Engineer IV demonstrates an extensive knowledge and understanding of software engineering principles, concepts, practices and theories. Responsibilities include research, design, development and test of complex embedded software. Work closely with other engineering and functional areas to obtain optimum utilization of equipment, machinery and resources. Directs work for other software engineers and technicians.
Primary or Major Responsibilities:
- Use Sparton policies and procedures to complete work assignments.
- Design of software for low-cost, high-volume systems for defense and security system development.
- Design, develop, document, code and test defense and security systems software and test software.
- Coordinate and interface with other design personnel to design, execute and test prototype software builds.
- Interface with quality and manufacturing engineers in ensure proper product quality and manufacturing transfer.
- Conduct complex in-house software test under the direction and guidance of other Engineers.
- Prepare and participate in software, electronics and system design reviews.
- Participate in product software failure analysis activities and compile test and failure analysis reports.
- Generates software design documentation and report data from tests.
- Keep accurate and complete records of engineering activities.
- Act as project lead including organizing, execution, and coordinating technical assignments.
- Evaluate materials and systems, identify equipment, or prepare work instructions for manufacturing.
- Support other software engineers in the software development process.
- Provide training and/or direction to other engineers, technicians or manufacturing operators.
- Provide input to bid and proposal activities.
- Provide communications and/or presentations to customers, suppliers or vendors.
- Travel and participation in product field tests.
- All other duties as assigned.
Education, Skills and Experience
- 4-year degree from an accredited university in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field OR a combination of education and relevant experience.
- A minimum of 7 years related experience in software development.
- Experience using MATLAB for algorithm development and data analysis.
- Strong background in mathematics: vector and matrix math operations, complex variables, digital filters and acoustic audio processing.
- Understanding how to read schematics and understanding electronics designs is a plus.
- Experience / training in software design analysis and coding for embedded systems in C or C++.
- Experience with microprocessor components and peripheral interfaces (UART, SPI, I2C, I2S, DMA, interrupts, clock configuration, etc.).
- Experience with peripherals, such as Audio ADCs, DACs and CODECs.
- Experience with FreeRTOS, Micrium uC-OS products, or equivalent.
Required Qualifications
- US Citizenship is required.
- Proficient user of software tools (requirements tracking, compilers, assemblers, debuggers, programmers, JTAG, etc.
- Knowledge of full software development lifecycle.
- Microcontroller and SOC knowledge and experience desirable.
- Knowledge of digital processing concepts and DSP processors.
- Knowledge of physical layer communication concepts and/or communication theory.
- Experience implementing (not just configuring) Software Defined Radios (SDRs) desirable
- Knowledge of data acquisition concepts, instrument control, test, measurement, and implementation of control interfaces to hardware.
- Multi-core or multi-processor data synchronization techniques is desirable.
- Practical skills for bench level work, including the ability to configure test equipment to verify design.
- Able to draw solutions from both formal training and experience.
- Able to use original thinking and ingenuity to solve problems.
- Experience in generating design documentation, ability to write technical reports and proposals, provide cost and schedule estimates, and participate in presentations.
- Proficiency in MS Office Suite including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Teams.
- Must show high initiative, motivation, and the ability to act independently to resolve technical issues.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a clearance may be required
