Summary
The Manager, Building Services – Electrical, will manage the team in the development of client-driven electrical design approaches and solutions. This individual will use extensive knowledge of specialized design concepts and software tools to provide direction and oversight to the team, as they produce designs and drawings as per industry standards, client requirements and applicable codes and regulations.  With exemplary leadership skills and a proven ability to lead and motivate a team, the Manager, will mentor and supervise the team members, providing technical support, as well as directing work and managing resources. Efficient delivery of project deliverables, effective quality control, clear communication of expectations to stakeholders and upward reporting are critical tasks that must be performed continually.
The manager is responsible for strategy, structure, budgets, people, financial outcomes, and scorecard metrics of the electrical team.
The manager will be required to be the electrical lead engineer/professional of record, leading a team in design and construction of projects.  For small multi-discipline projects, the manager may be required to be the project manager as well as the electrical engineer/professional of record. We have an opportunity in our Burnaby, BC office.

Responsibilities
Manager Technical Job Duties

  • Provide technical support on the electrical designs and calculations in accordance with the relevant Canadian and Industrial standards and project specifications
  • Direct the preparation of and/or prepare detailed designs for electrical systems using AutoCAD
  • Participate in technical tasks requiring accuracy in calculations, completeness of data and adherence to prescribed analysis, design or computational requirements
  • Participate in the preparation and review of specifications, technical bid evaluations, procurement documentation and construction cost estimates
  • Direct and generate additional engineering products that may include reports, technical memoranda, illumination studies, specifications, and other supporting documents
  • Assist other engineers, technologists, designers and drafters in carrying out technical tasks
  • Review and perform quality control checks for drawings, calculations and deliverables
  • Perform Professional of Record functions
  • Perform project management functions on projects of varying sizes including budgets, schedules, design reports and peer reviews
  • Liaise with clients and other stakeholders on project statuses, issues, concerns and opportunities
  • Keep abreast of best practices and the latest technology in the Infrastructure and Transportation industry
Manager Staff Management Job Duties
  • Manage, mentor and oversee the day-to-day activities of the design team, ensuring adherence to company policies, processes and the efficient implementation of company tools and systems
  • Ensure responsibilities, authority and accountability of all direct reports are defined and understood
  • Identify employee performance issues and escalate to the Regional General Manager and/or HR as appropriate
  • Oversee staff resource assignments to ensure appropriate project staffing and escalate staffing concerns to the appropriate level; coordinate with Human Resources for recruitment as required
  • Provide mentorship and training for junior staff, supporting development opportunities and initiatives for team members in accordance with available budget
  • Work with Human Resources and the applicable workplace parties to support employee development opportunities and initiatives
  • Lead the performance review for direct reports and provide guidance and support to team leads in this process
  • Support employee onboarding and offboarding activities
  • Propose and/or support employee engagement activities (e.g.: Yammer)
Lead Electrical Engineer / Professional of Record Job Duties
  • Direct and coordinate electrical planning and implementation ensuring compliance with specifications, codes, and work order requirements
  • Report work compliance with relevant codes, standards and procedures
  • Provide designs such items as cable tray layouts, electrical equipment arrangements, lighting layouts, fire alarm layouts, security including door access controls and CCTV layouts, data/voice including WAP layouts and LV single line diagrams
  • Provide electrical calculations such as building load calculations, cable and conduit sizing, volt-drop, EHT heat loss, illumination level, distribution transformer sizing and panel loading,
  • Prepare and/or create specifications for purchase of materials and equipment
  • Provide expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems
  • Create technical reports, documentation, calculations and sketches
  • Develop sustainable work relationships to ensure positive resolutions with all contacts
  • Perform and analyze electrical power studies, e.g., short circuit, selective coordination and arc flash studies as assigned
  • Prepare designs for substations at transmission and distribution voltages.
  • Prepare power distribution drawings for buildings, hospitals, as well as emergency power systems.
  • Prepare cost estimates and equipment layouts
  • Oversee the implementation of designs
  • Provide resource estimates and schedules for projects
  • Make technical decisions
  • Maintain records of project resources
  • Participate in department training programs
  • Maintain up-to-date electrical engineering knowledge and stay current with industry trends and best practices
Project Manager Job Duties
  • Manage the entire lifecycle of the company's project portfolio, ranging from strategic planning initiatives to tactical activities.
  • Design, implement, and supervise the implementation of all new system installations, expansions, modifications, migrations, and so on.
  • Establish a Project Charter for each approved project, defining the projects goals, objectives, risks, assumptions, staffing levels, roles and responsibilities, work breakdown structure, milestones, and deliverables.
  • Conduct cost-benefit analyses, risk analyses, and ROI calculations to determine project feasibility.
  • Manage project activities throughout lifecycle, including the allocation of adequate resources, scheduling, documentation, budget, and other factors necessary for success.
  • Plan all project timelines, milestones, deliverables, and micro-deliverables using the appropriate software tools and/or PM methods.
  • Organize project teams into suitable workgroups and guide the teams throughout their efforts to produce deliverables according to specification.
  • Negotiate with other business units to obtain required skill sets.
  • Establish and deliver mechanisms for tracking project progress and reporting to stakeholders via a formal communications plan.
  • Conduct stakeholder meetings and forums in order to solicit feedback, input, and expectations; incorporate these into project plans.
  • Establish, implement, and follow a formal change management program.
  • Reallocate resources across multiple projects where necessary; identify and resolve any resource allocation discrepancies.
  • Adhere to established methodologies for project management.
  • Produce regular reports (status, escalations, etc.) on the progress of projects; deliver these reports during regular stakeholder meetings.
  • Track all project costs to ensure completion within budget; procure extra budget funding where necessary.
  • Closely monitor the efforts and billing of third-party workers, such as consultants, contractors, and other specialists.
  • Identify and resolve conflicts within project teams and associate work; create contingency plans to mitigate risk.
  • Manage project dependencies.
  • Conduct project post mortems in order to identify areas for improvement; make recommendations based on findings.
Business Development
  • Support the Business Development Team (BD) to effectively manage and expand existing customer relationships
  • Support the BD team to grow and develop a new customer base 
  • Support BD activities including but not limited to proposal preparation, attendance at conferences, seminars, etc. for the purpose of networking and promoting the company
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent
  • Professional Engineer designation with EGBC (Electrical)
  • Ten (10) or more years of relevant progressive experience with small, medium and large sized Buildings projects
  • Good understanding of electrical systems design and construction standards including the Canadian Electrical Code, NEMA, IES, British Columbia Building Code, Ashrae 90.1
  • Experience in Healthcare projects and standards and membership in CHES is an asset.
  • Having obtained Reliability Security Clearance will be an asset
  • Strong design experience and understanding of interior and exterior lighting systems, fire alarm layouts, security systems including door access controls and CCTV layouts, data/voice systems including PA, Nurse Call, WAP layouts and LV single line diagrams.
  • Strong understanding of high voltage and low voltage electrical systems and engineering fundamentals
  • Working knowledge of drafting tools including AutoCAD and REVIT, analysis tools such as AGi32 and ETAP, and Microsoft Office suite of products
  • Demonstrated experience managing and mentoring a team of professionals with the ability to lead a team of professionals, technical staff, and administrative personnel to deliver projects and services
  • Demonstrated experience managing projects including scope, deliverable, budget, schedule and record keeping requirements
  • Excellent English language communication skills (oral and written), with the ability to create and conduct presentations and prepare and review technical proposals and other materials, in support of business development activities
  • Strong sense of ethics and integrity
  • High flexibility with strong interpersonal skills that allow one to work effectively in a diverse environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with a range of personalities to establish effective working relationships with the required stakeholders
