Responsibilities
As an Electrical Engineer in Eastman’s Engineering & Services Department, Electrical & Instrumentation (E&I) Group, you’ll provide electrical engineering technical support for plant operating and maintenance departments. You’ll also provide electrical engineering support for capital projects including definition of the electrical/instrument scope of project, input to estimates, design and specification of equipment, and other needed capital project services. You will maintain expertise in assigned functional areas and areas of subject matter expertise. You will also maintain Corporate and site standards related to assigned functional areas, aligning these with other industry standards as applicable.
Job Responsibilities
- Provide electrical and instrument (E&I) engineering technical support, primarily for the Longview site, but for other sites as requested
- Identify opportunities for improved instrument and interlock design (e.g., improved safety, quality, cost, reliability, etc.)
- Maintain technical expertise in assigned functional areas such as SIS, instrumented protective systems (IPS), instrumentation, controls, etc.
- Provide or coordinate training for operating departments and Control Systems Mechanics related to interlock troubleshooting and verification
- Provide forecast cost and schedule estimates for capital and maintenance projects
- Determine scope of work for instrument and interlock portion of projects
- Provide engineering design and specifications to support procurement and construction activities for projects
- Lead and/or participate on standards teams to develop standards and practices to be used for capital and maintenance projects
- Maintain knowledge of latest innovations and technologies
- Interpret codes and standards related to functional areas of expertise
- Participate with E&I team members on improvement projects related to E&I processes
- Provide on-call E&I support for plant operations
- Prioritize work assignments based on the safety, environmental, regulatory and economic value to Eastman
- Instrumentation and Process Safety Interlock functional ownership:
- Work with Operations and Maintenance to address interlock concerns
- Provide engagement and support for capital projects involving interlock design and applications
- Support site efforts to ensure interlock verifications are properly scheduled and completed in accordance with interlock design requirements
- Assist in the troubleshooting of SIS and interlock-related issues
- Lead effort for site interlock initiatives to ensure documentation and procedures are in accordance with the necessary requirements
- Evaluate interlock verification extensions for approval
- Ensure that outside SIS design firms meet Eastman standards for quality and safety and follow procedures
- Engage in incident reviews associated with instrumentation and interlocks to discern root causes
- Provide mentorship and sharing of knowledge for other team members
- Perform above duties with attention to safety in both work practices and design Perform above duties with a focus on teamwork and customer satisfaction
Qualifications
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET-accredited university required
- At least 5 years of relevant professional experience required
- Experience in chemical or petrochemical industry highly preferred
- Must have general electrical engineering and project management skills, including all or some of the following:
- Process instrumentation
- Process control
- Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS)
- SIS/SIL interlock design
- Must possess a mindset that injuries and safety events are avoidable; unwavering commitment to personnel and process safety
- Ability to work effectively in a team environment with personnel from diverse backgrounds
- Ability to effectively handle a large volume of important or urgent issues in a timely manner
- High level of initiative; ability to effectively self-manage a very demanding workload
