The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction (NCDAC) is seeking an experienced, energized, and collaborative oriented Electrical Engineer (Engineer II) to work within the NCDAC Support Services, Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) team and reports directly to the Electrical Design Supervisor and will provide the DECM-Engineering group with leadership and forward-thinking direction, management, and coordination on multi-million-dollar Force Account and like-in-kind construction, renovation, and maintenance projects.


This position will provide DECM-Engineering with in-house electrical design of life-safety, telecommunications, primary and secondary power distribution systems energy efficiency, egress, and space planning on multi-million-dollar Force Account construction, renovation, and major maintenance projects for all NCDAC owned facilities.

This position will work closely with other in-house design disciplines, construction, and maintenance personnel within the Division of Engineering, Construction, and Maintenance (DECM) and with outside design and construction entities to provide services to the department in the form of plan development, specification writing, estimating, building, field investigations, project management, and planning, scoping, budgeting, and evaluation of other systems for new and existing facilities.  


Note: This position requires professional engineer licensure in North Carolina OR professional engineer licensure in another state (If licensed outside of NC, confirmed comity from the NC Board of Engineers and Land Surveyors is required prior to hire date) OR the ability to obtain NC PE License within 18 months of hire date, as a condition of employment. 

This is a full-time position (40 hours per week) with State Benefits

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies


The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities listed below, along with the Minimum Education and Experience requirements, are REQUIRED to qualify for this position. We will not review resumes in lieu of the Experience and Education listed on the application. To qualify for this position, applicants must document on the application that they possess ALL of the following:


  • Thorough knowledge in the areas required are - power distribution 600 volts and below; lighting, grounding; voltage drop; National Electric Code; NC Building Codes; contract administration; construction, renovation, major maintenance, and repair; life-safety codes, and NFPA Standards
  • Experience developing plan drawings, riser diagrams, specifications, technical computations and/or cost estimates


Management Preferences (preferred but not required):    
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise the preparation of plans and specifications (designs will include everything from minor rework of existing buildings to improving energy efficiency to complete electrical construction documents for new facilities) 
  • Familiarity with the State Construction Office and DAC policies and procedures concerning design, procurement, and construction of building electrical systems
  • Working knowledge of AutoCad and Revit
  • Troubleshooting of new and existing electrical systems


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelor's degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience (OR) an equivalent combination of education and experience. 

Necessary Special Qualification: 
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 19,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving the lives and property of its citizens through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced after conviction for violating North Carolina laws.
